It is an amazing place. My partner and I chose this hiking trail and we find it is really suitable for hiking. Though it is steep but you can always make it. Even some puppies climbed to the top. This tunnel witnessed how my partner loves me. I am really grateful to this place. Also the creek is cool and clean. You can also hear some birdsong here. That is amazing.

Directions: head to Washigton park trailhead on Google maps or use AllTrails.Last 5.6 miles are gravel roads. Drivable for sedan, but the last mile is roughest.Wouldnt go after rain. In order to get to the tunnel, take Arizona trail on your right. You will cross the bridge and turn left on the trail. It will fork soon, keep going straight along the river. If you are following the AllTrails directions, it will get you to the old uphill going road.Keep going until you see 1/4 RR trail sign. The last part is a lot of scrambling until you get to the cave.

My family started the hike at rim road, moved down along the power poles and turned left right after the 2nd power pole. As others have said, the hike is very steep, but definitely doable. We had our 12 - 20 year old children and it was a good work out but everyone did fine. There is a bit of a scramble right before getting to the tunnel because there are a lot of possible paths and none is clearly marked. Whichever path you choose to go up, it was exciting to see the tunnel!

Only 1 mile out and back but it took me and my kids two hours due to rocky conditions. Beautiful hike

Beautiful hike, approximately 2 miles with a 1300 foot elevation gain to reach the tunnel. The trail from Washington Park to the Railroad Tunnel is moderately difficult and there is a lot of loose rock the last 500 ft as you climb to the tunnel. Do not recommend this part of the trail to take children on.

There are two enterances near this trail. Take the entrance with the labeled sign and the electrical lines running down the path, not the fence enterance. Once you go on the trail stop at the 2nd electrical pole and go over the wash to the left of you. This leads to the correct trail that is WAY safer and not as steep down to a 4 way crossroad. Do not go all the way down the electrical pole trail it is WAY too steep and dangerous. We’re a group of 24 year olds and we kept falling. Once we got to the crossroads we were unsure of which way to go, as there were 4 different trails and you can’t see any sign of the tunnel. We thought someone played a prank and switched the signs bc one of the signs was on the ground, but it was correct. Follow the sign, and go straight up. Once you get closer to the tunnel, it is VERY steep and sandy but you won’t even see the tunnel until you reach the top of a fallen tree and hoist yourself up and over the trunk. Very dangerous trail and definitely not for kids. We only found out about going over the wash at the 2nd electrical pole from the other experienced hikers we met at the tunnel, who we followed back, and we then realized our mistake.

Beautiful little oasis in the Tonto National Forest with waterfalls and greenery galore. The last push up to the tunnel can be a little tricky but we'll worth the climb

A very fun hike all the way to the base of where the tunnel (cave) is.... Then it's game on all the way up! Beautiful views and the air-conditioning is always on in the tunnel.
