This place was easy to get to and really amazing to discover. I really didn't know what to expect but was presently surprised. I could've kept it going! Only 2 mile hike so you can be in and out to lunch in just a few hours.

Beautiful Hike. Fabulous views! We were told that dogs are not permitted on the trails although we didn't see a sign. Returned the next day without the dog. To the dam its about 5 mi there and back and it took us about 3 hours with little breaks (& two kids). I thought it was the perfect mix of uphill, flat and natural features for a beginner hiker. There was water in a few places in early January. We left about 9am but even in January it would have been a good idea if we had left earlier. I would be wary of this hike in the summer months because there is very little shade (if you have older, younger or are not accustomed to our climate) maybe bring an umbrella and leave at 5-6am. We each drank an entire large refillable waterbottle during our hike and it wasn't enough! Don't forget your sunscreen! Make sure to get both maps. The dam is not a direct hit. We started on the Loma trail but had to jump on two other trails as we went. You can Google map it too!

Nice easy trail. About 4 miles round trip, and less 500 feet elevation gain. Good out to the Garwood Dam, believe it or not, and end at the wash there.

It's a dam created by the original homesteaders that claimed what is now Saguaro National park. It is near the middle of lower wildhorse canyon. The park service has cut a hole through it so the washes below the dam can flow naturally. The park service would like you not to climb on it, and the view isn't much different from the middle of the dam.
